In this groundbreaking biography of Queen Anne Boleyn, learn how the ill-fated second wife of Renaissance England's Henry XVIII met her downfall–and how she came to be so vilified and misunderstood.
Anne Boleyn has mesmerized the general public for centuries. Her tragic execution at the Tower of London on the 19th of May, 1536—orchestrated by her own husband—never ceases to intrigue. While many stories of Anne's downfall have been told, few have truly traced the origins of her grim fate. In Thorns, Lust, and Glory, Estelle Paranque takes us back to where it all started: to France, where Anne learned the lessons that would set her on the path to becoming one of England's most infamous queens.
A fascinating new perspective on Tudor history's most enduring story, Thorns, Lust, and Glory is an unmissable account of a queen on the edge.

Paranque (Blood, Fire and Gold, 2022) explores Anne Boleyn's ties to the French court and the impact of that relationship on future events. As a young woman, Boleyn became a lady-in-waiting to the queen of France, and Paranque argues that this experience fostered connections which affected later affairs as Boleyn campaigned to become Henry VIII's second wife. Boleyn's position in France may have influenced Henry's desire for a more formal alliance with the French king, although diplomatic matters in Europe were complicated by Henry's desire to divorce his first wife. Paraque's account spans Boleyn's time in France through her death, with a focus on the political maneuverings between England, France, and Spain. Henry's request for a divorce and subsequent break with Rome is also prominently featured, and Paranque argues that Boleyn was blamed disproportionately for her role. As Boleyn's papers were destroyed after her death, Paranque is left to make informed suppositions about Boleyn's thoughts and motivations through the writings of others. A good addition to the large body of Tudor history.

In this biography of Henry VIII's second wife, Anne Boleyn, British actor Anna Wilson-Jones brings a clipped tone to the complex story of the King's efforts to divorce his first wife, Catherine, so he can marry Anne. Though Henry succeeds, the repercussions eventually result in England's break with the Vatican. Soon, Henry, tiring of his wife, has her beheaded so he can marry his new paramour, Jane Seymour. While the period was a crucial turning point in British history, the author's claim that Anne was a major player on the international stage is weak, and her efforts to inflate Anne's role seem like padding. Wilson-Jones conveys the author's sympathy for her subject, but this listener's attention wandered as the narrative energy flagged. L.W.S. © AudioFile 2024, Portland, Maine
