British journalist and podcaster Alderton shares a sampling of letters from her Sunday Times Style column. The author, who describes herself as a feminist and an "agony aunt" in the introduction, explains that she tries to see both sides of the problems when answering these letters. Avoiding passing judgments, Alderton offers sensible and often entertaining advice on a wide range of topics, including dating, friendship, relationships, family, sex, breakups, and body image. The letters that Alderton has selected, mostly from young women, present some interesting issues. Some advice seekers are addicted to love; one likes dogs better than men. Some are incompatible with those who are meant to be their friends; some can't get along with their lovers. One has issues with her boyfriend's parents; another has an eating disorder. Heartaches and despair often fill the pages, and Alderton addresses each missive with kindness and empathy. She recalls her own youth and shares a perspective that offers both hope and commonsense advice. The issues are universal, and American readers will identify with Alderton's message despite her occasional British culture references.
